Members approved the agenda and the minutes of the October 30 board meeting, with corrections.
Treasurer's Report: Bob Storer reported that the bank balance was $3,927.47, excluding some speaker expenses to be reimbursed and also two checks from the Anchorage World Affairs Council. The annual meeting grossed $750 including some membership fees. Doug Mertz purchased the projector for about $800.
Committee Reports
Program: Doug said that Melinda Kimble (UN Foundation) was rescheduled for March 28. Other upcoming programs: Dr. Desmond Dinan (European Union, December 13); Tese Neighbor (China, January 4); Skip Schiel (Middle East Water, January 10); Paul Dunscomb (Russian Far East, January 25).
Special Events: Bob Storer said that Alan McCabe and Leslie would help him seek donations for the auction at the JWAC WorldQuest 2007 (Friday, January 19 at Centennial Hall). He had picked up the tickets for the event and would distribute them to board members to sell ($50 each). Elfrida will help sell tickets at the event. Bruce will contact Dan DeRoux for permission to use his design for posters. Fred will take care of poster printing and distribution. Dave Sturdevant and Diane Tschirgi were developing the quiz questions, but needed judges at the event; Fred and Leslie volunteered to help. Jocelyn will prepare the PSA for KTOO. Leslie encouraged everyone to take advantage of the holiday social season to sell tickets.
Outreach: Elfrida said that she was updating the website and would continue to work with the consultant. She mentioned the need to encourage more memberships. Membership forms hadn’t been available at the programs but she would make sure that they would be in the future.
Tuesday Night Travelogue: December 19—Katherine Palmer on her year in Turkey. (Note: Other programs: January 9—Jay Livey, et.al. on Cairo; January 30—Elfrida on the Troll Mountains of Nordland; February 20—Fred Gaffney on the Locks of England.) Bob Storer said that he had the dimensions for the board needed to support the projector and Elfrida noted that an extension cord was no longer available at the Nickleodeon.
World Affairs Forum 2007 (Latin America): Bruce said that Paulo Sotero (Brazil Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center) would be a speaker; also, tentatively, a speaker from the Mexico Project of the National Security Archives at George Washington University. That institute is reviewing archives relating to the 1968 massacre and other aspects of the “dirty war” in Mexico in the 1960s and 1970s. There are several other leads for speakers.
Unfinished and New Business
Leslie stated that the group looking at co-sponsorship of programs with other organizations had not come to a resolution, but would report at the January meeting. Tom Stewart reiterated that his house is available for visiting speakers. Jocelyn said that she would be happy to produce radio PSAs for all JWAC programs; Leslie will work with her on those.
Next Meeting: The next board meeting will be on Monday, January 8, 2007.
