Juneau World Affairs Council Board Meeting
Monday, November 12, 2007

Board Members present: Bruce Botelho, Doug Mertz, David Moe, Leslie Longenbaugh, Bob Storer, Mary Miller, Jim Baldwin, Elfrida Nord, Geron Bruce, Jocelyn Clark, and Tom Lane.

A brief meeting was held after the Annual Meeting:

• Bruce asked if the current board meeting schedule (second Monday of the month at 5:30 was acceptable. No one objected.
• Bruce recommended that a speaker be found for December as none were scheduled for that month. Jocelyn Clark indicated that might be able to arrange for one.
• Bruce mentioned that the Nickelodeon was in danger of closing. The owner, Lyle Hebert, has not charged JWAC for use of the theater for the travelogue series, but given the financial difficulties, Bruce felt that a $50 per use payment would be appropriate. A motion to approve these payments was passed without objection.
• Doug Mertz noted that a decision needed to be made about whom to send to the National World Affairs Council Conference in February. Members who had attended previously said that it was a worthwhile event. The Board agreed to send two people and, on a motion from Bob Storer, to pay up to $1,250 (total for the two) in expenses. Doug Mertz and Mary Miller expressed interest in attending.
• Geron Bruce said that preliminary assignments had been made in developing quiz questions for the January WorldQuest fundraiser.
• Doug noted that KTOO/Alaska One agreed to televise JWAC programs on the new “360 North” broadcasts.
• Elfrida Nord made a plea for new and renewal memberships, suggesting a letter be sent to the mailing list soliciting membership dues. Doug felt that should be sent out before the end of the year to mesh with those who made end-of-year contributions. He wanted the Outreach Committee to draft a letter by the December meeting. Doug also noted the necessity to re-establish committees at the December meeting.

Next Meeting: The next Board Meeting is scheduled for 5:30 pm, December 10, 2007.
